Wallems Leave Lasting Legacy to GHS Educational Trust

Wallems Leave Lasting Legacy to GHS Educational Trust

The significant gift made recently by the estate of Glenn Wallem to the Glasgow High School Educational Trust is a final reflection of a commitment to community and education he and his wife Carolee Grina Wallem made over their lifetimes. Their generosity and willingness to share time and talent as well as resources will be long remembered.

As alumni of GHS, both Glenn and Carolee Grina Wallem valued the opportunity that education provides to all, and they supported the trust regularly. In addition, she was very active in numerous local organizations such as Soroptimists, Valley View Home, and First Lutheran Church, often serving in a leadership role. Glenn quietly helped individuals wherever possible as a part of his daily life. Together they enjoyed fishing, bowling, travel, collecting, and the companionship of friends and neighbors nurtured over decades.

All donations to the trust are invested and the interest earned on the corpus, which now exceeds $3.7 million dollars, is awarded to eligible GHS alumni pursuing post-secondary education at vocational school or college through a semi-annual application process administered by the trustees. The trust was established by the Class of 1938, children of the Great Depression, to help others achieve their educational dreams. Since its inception in 1964, it has given over $1.5 million dollars to hundreds of different alumni, many of whom have received multiple gifts.

The trust also makes gifts to Glasgow High School for equipment and programs that cannot be financed within the regular school budget. These gifts benefit the entire student body and the community at large when they attend events at the school. The value of these gifts totals $180,327.50.

Although the trust has received many large gifts of cash, real estate, and stock from supporters across the nation, equally important and appreciated are gifts of all sizes given in honor, memory, or recognition of a specific individual. Whenever the trust receives donations in the name of a particular individual that total $500, a gift is made to a student or the school in that persons name. Donations to the trust of $10,000 or more entitle the donor to an annual naming opportunity in perpetuity.

The Wallem legacy of service and sharing is one that the Glasgow High School Educational Trust is honored to represent. For nearly half a century, the trust has striven to accomplish its work in that same spirit.

More information about the trust, including donation forms, applications, and eligibility requirements, may be found on the trust’s website www.ghsedutrust.org.
