Kathleen “Kathy” Logan Block Memorial

As the only girl growing up in a family of four boys, it is not hard to imagine that Kathleen “Kathy” Logan would hold an extra-special place in her brothers’ hearts. Protective and nurturing amid the rough and tumble of daily life, brothers Michael, Timothy, Patrick, and Dennis cherished and admired their sister throughout her lifetime. She was kind, intelligent, witty, and loyal. When she succumbed to complications from ALS this March, they chose to honor her life, her values, and her accomplishments with a gift to the Glasgow High School Educational Trust in her name.

Kathleen “Kathy” Logan Block attended elementary school and high school in Glasgow, Montana, graduating with the Class of 1966. She initially attended Montana State University-Billings (then Eastern Montana College) to pursue a degree in education and later completed her studies at Carroll College.

With her husband Tom Block, Kathy spent three years in the early ‘80s in Botswana, Africa, teaching at an English-speaking school. It was the beginning of her lifelong mission to bring an education and the hope it offers to those unserved or underserved in places where many would not have the fortitude to work or to reside. When they returned to the United States, Kathy and Tom settled in Heart Butte, Montana, where they taught on the Blackfeet Reservation for eight years.

She later earned her master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Northern Arizona University and, subsequently, spent the rest of her career educating students on the Navajo and White Mountain Apache reservations in Arizona. In addition to her classroom commitments, Kathy was an indispensable and tireless force in the establishment and growth of Navajo YES, a wellness and empowerment organization on the reservation. For Kathy, teaching was not her job; it was her life.

As a breast cancer survivor, Kathleen “Kathy” Logan Block was an equally determined advocate for increasing breast cancer awareness, and, as an avid walker and hiker, she completed several 30-mile walks for that purpose. The mother of four and grandmother of four, her zeal for mountain biking and backpacking in the canyons and mountains of northern Arizona amazed and inspired her colleagues and many others.

The donation made to the Glasgow High School Educational Trust by Kathy’s brothers and their wives, Michael (Virginia), Timothy (Diana), Patrick (Maureen), and Dennis (Judith) will further enable the trust to fulfill its mission, which is to provide financial aid to Glasgow High School graduates who are pursuing higher education and to purchase enrichment programs and equipment for GHS that benefit all students but that cannot be financed within the school’s regular budget.

The Glasgow High School Educational Trust was established in 1964 by the Glasgow High School Class of 1938. Gifts of cash, stock, and real estate from supporters across the nation have grown the corpus of the trust to over $7 million dollars. Interest earned on its investments is awarded to eligible applicants through a semi-annual process administered by the trustees. Application deadlines are July 1st and October 15th of each year.

Glasgow High School graduates who have completed one year of college or one semester of trade school, are in good academic standing, attending full-time (12 semester credits minimum), and showing steady progress toward completion of a degree or certification are encouraged to apply. This includes students who are pursuing their degrees through online or other correspondence courses. Financial need has always been a primary consideration. The application, which lists additional requirements that must be met, is available at www.ghsedutrust.org. It must be completed properly, thoroughly, and submitted on time to be considered.

To date, the trust has made 2,343 awards to 722 different students totaling $2,184,500.00. Many of these students have received multiple awards over their courses of study. The trust has also made 119 awards to Glasgow High School providing enrichment activities and advanced equipment to every department. The dollar value of these gifts totals $241,015.80.

Whenever the trust receives donations that total $500 in the name of a particular individual, a gift is given to a student or to Glasgow High School in the name of that person. Gifts of $10,000 or more in the name of a particular individual allow for a permanent annual naming opportunity. The trust is honored to add Kathleen “Kathy” Logan Block’s name to its permanent list and will make the first gift in her memory next fall.

To teach is to touch a life forever is an adage that holds meaning across cultures and time. Kathleen “Kathy” Logan Block personified that spirit, and her brothers’ generous gift in her memory to the Glasgow High School Educational Trust will ensure that her spirit lives on in perpetuity.
